Competent Crew

This course introduces a complete beginner to competent cruising. This is perfect for dinghy sailors looking to test the waters of yachting, families preparing to cruise abroad, or anyone who just wants more in-depth knowledge of sailing. By the end of this course you will have knowledge about personal safety, seamanship, and helmsmanship to be a useful member of crew on a cruising yacht.

Day Skipper Theory 

Availability

This course is a staple part of becoming a Day Skipper. It provides all of the necessary theory for the Day Skipper Practical course.


This course is the pre-requisite for the Day Skipper Practical course. It is an insightful start to your skippering adventure.

By the end of this course you will have knowledge of navigation through tidal waters, a good understanding of buoyage and collision regulations, and be prepared for your Day Skipper Practical.

Day Skipper

Availability

This course is designed to arm you with the necessary skills to help you safely charter your own yacht or hone your skills. The course is aimed at aspiring skippers with good crewing knowledge. By the end of this course you will be able to safely skipper, pilot, navigate, and sail a yacht by day in familiar waters.

  • Theory to the level of Day Skipper Theory
  • 5 days at sea

Yachtmaster / Coastal Skipper Theory

Availability

This course is the pre-requisite for the Practical Yachtmaster and Coastal Skipper courses. It provides all of the essential information to complete the practical courses. 



By the end of this course, you will have advanced knowledge of pilotage, meteorology, stability, Collision Regulations, and have a deeper knowledge of electronic navigation aids (GPS and chart plotters).

Recommended experience:

  • Experience required: Current navigation skills to RYA Day Skipper level, and practical sailing or motorboat experience to RYA Day Skipper level.

Coastal Skipper Practical

Availability

This course is perfect for an experienced RYA Day Skipper looking to undertake longer and more complex passages which may include night sailing or watch keeping systems.



By the end of this course, you will have knowledge of skippering techniques and navigation for coastal passages by day and night, advanced boat handling and pilotage for experienced Day Skippers.

Duration:

  • 5 days

Recommended experience:

  • 15 days aboard, 2 days as a Skipper, 300 miles logged and 8 night hours. Sailing ability must be to RYA Day Skipper level. Knowledge of navigation to RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory level.

  • Advanced navigation (both offshore and in limited visibility)

Yachtmaster Exam Preparation

Availability

This course is the next natural step on completion of the Coastal Skipper course. It will allow a Skipper to take a yacht on coastal passages.


By the end of this course you will be ready to take the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.

Duration:

  • 5 days

Recommended experience:

  • A minimum of 30 days aboard, 2 days as Skipper, 800 miles logged (if RYA Coastal certificate held, only 400 miles required), 12 night hours (Half the qualifying sea time must have been conducted in tidal waters), VHF operators certificate, valid first aid certificate, current theory knowledge to RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster level.
